Veterans Memorial Flagpole Dedication

Fri, 11 Nov, 2016 11:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Dedication of Veterans Memorial at Franciscan University to Be Held November 11 STEUBENVILLE, OH—One year after the groundbreaking ceremony, the formal dedication of the Veterans Memorial Flagpole at Franciscan University of Steubenville will take place on Veterans Day. The ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11. The public is invited to attend.

The ceremony will feature a presentation of the colors and a 21-gun salute by the VFW Post 232, from Amsterdam, Ohio, a roll call of Franciscan University of Steubenville students and alumni killed in action read by alumni chaplain Father Dan Pattee, TOR, remarks by alumni military veterans, and the playing of taps by Rick Hicks of Steubenville City Schools.

The memorial is located across the street from Ss. Louis and Elizabeth Hall on the lawn of the J.C. Williams Center. The central point of the memorial is a flagpole and plaque, which are surrounded by cement benches.

Funds for the memorial were raised by Franciscan University alumni from the 1960s and 1970s who were members of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (TKE). Inspired by their TKE brother, Whitey Schoff '66, who died in Vietnam as a United States Marine, TKE members Ray Challis '67 and Dan Schmitt '67 collaborated to raise $14,500 from alumni for the memorial, which honors all veterans since the school's founding in 1946. Challis and Schmitt will deliver remarks during the ceremony.

Work on the memorial was completed this summer.
